GEO Is the New SEO
GEO Is the New SEO
For twenty years, marketers optimised pages to rank. Now they also need to optimise brands to be understood, cited and recommended by generative AI.
First: SEO is not dead
'GEO is the new SEO' is a useful headline, but the reality is more nuanced. Google's own 2026 guidance says traditional SEO best practices remain foundational for generative search. A technically weak website does not become strong because somebody adds an FAQ about AI.
Generative Engine Optimization - GEO - is better understood as a new visibility layer on top of SEO. SEO helps search engines find, understand and rank pages. GEO focuses on whether AI systems can confidently use your information when constructing an answer.
Why the distinction matters now
AI answers often combine information from multiple sources. That means your brand can be visible without earning the classic blue-link click, or invisible despite having a decent ranking for the underlying keyword.
Google reinforced this shift in 2026 by introducing dedicated Search Console reporting for visibility inside generative AI features. Kantar has also launched tools that monitor brand presence across Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot and Perplexity. Measurement is catching up with behaviour.
What GEO rewards
- 1Clear entities: the model should understand who your company is, what you sell, where you operate and how your offer differs.
- 2Useful structure: descriptive headings, concise explanations, FAQs, comparison information and content organised around real questions.
- 3Evidence: original research, case studies, expert opinions, practical data and transparent sources.
- 4External validation: trusted websites mentioning and describing your business consistently.
- 5Freshness where freshness matters: products, pricing, regulations, availability and time-sensitive claims should be maintained.
Belgium adds another layer: language
Belgian companies often operate across Dutch, French and English. That creates both complexity and opportunity. A business can be well represented in one language and effectively invisible in another.
GEO strategy therefore needs more than translated keywords. Each language version should answer how customers in that market actually ask the question. Terminology, examples, regulatory references and location signals should feel native. AEVOS approaches multilingual SEO and GEO as separate search environments connected by one brand, not as three copies of the same page.
What not to do
- 1Do not publish hundreds of thin AI-written pages. Generative systems have no reason to cite information that is already available everywhere else.
- 2Do not obsess over a single prompt. AI answers vary by model, context, user and date. Measure patterns across question sets.
- 3Do not abandon conversion. Visibility is only useful if the website gives a recommended user a convincing next step.
- 4Do not separate GEO from brand strategy. Kantar's 2026 marketing research makes the point clearly: brands increasingly need to be legible not only to people, but also to the systems mediating their choices.
A practical GEO checklist
- 1Build a list of the 20-50 questions that influence purchase decisions in your category.
- 2Test those questions across major AI search experiences and record which sources appear.
- 3Upgrade pages with direct answers, first-party evidence and clear service information.
- 4Make your brand entity consistent across your website and external profiles.
- 5Add structured data where it genuinely describes the page.
- 6Monitor citations, brand mentions, qualified visits and conversions - not rankings alone.
The AEVOS view
GEO will become normal SEO work because search itself is becoming generative. The brands that adapt early do not need to chase hacks. They need better information architecture, stronger evidence, clearer positioning and consistent authority.
AEVOS helps Belgian businesses connect technical SEO, generative engine optimization, content strategy and conversion design so visibility turns into demand.
